Abstract
This study explores the role of the Treoraí—the Cooperating Teacher, who support student teachers during school placements—in post-primary schools in Ireland. Recognising the significance of partnerships between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and schools in Initial Teacher Education (ITE), the research examines the professional learning needs of Treoraithe (Cooperating Teachers) and evaluates the effectiveness of targeted professional development resources. A survey of Treoraithe supporting student teachers from Hibernia College (n=13) revealed a need for greater role clarity, structured training, and enhanced communication with HEIs. In response, two key resources were developed: a Treoraí Handbook and online professional learning modules focused on observation, feedback, and reflection. Findings indicate that while Treoraithe are committed to supporting student teachers, they require formalised support structures and recognition of their role. The study highlights the potential of accessible professional development resources to enhance mentoring effectiveness and improve school placement experiences for student teachers.
