Abstract
This presentation was delivered as part of an online webinar organised by the Library Association of Ireland Open Scholarship Group on March 7th, 2025. In 2021, the College’s Research Committee identified the need for an institutional repository (IR), in line with national and international guidelines and practice. A cross-functional working group, composed of library and research staff from the Digital Learning Department, academic faculty members from the college’s School of Education, and an IT project manager, was established with the initial purpose of investigating possible IR software options and choosing a platform. Members of the group subsequently took on the implementation, development and administration of the IR. The project was at all times informed by support for the open-access movement and the importance of IRs for both sustainable long-term data preservation, and as a means of sharing research freely and widely with the global research community. Hibernia College’s IR, IASC, was proudly launched in July 2022. This paper outlines learnings from all stages of the process to date – initial investigation, choosing the most appropriate software, implementing the software, launching the repository, and continuing its maintenance and development, with particular focus on the challenges faced by the administrative team.
